QUESTIONS YOU MAY WANT ANSWERED...

  • WHAT ARE FOSSIL FUELS?
Fossil fuels are procured from materials that were once living (plants and animals). Coal, oil and natural gases are all fossil fuels.

  • HOW DOES COAL FORM?
Millions of years ago, the earth was believed to have been covered in swampy forests. This was known as the carboniferous period. These forest were rich in plants and unique animals such dinosaurs. As the climate changed, these unique plants and animals all died and became extinct. As the years turned into decades and the decades turned into centuries, more and more layers of sedimentary rock piled on top of the dead material. Eventually the pressure from the many layers becomes so great that the dead materials started fusing together and forming into coal.

  • HOW DOES OIL FORM?
Oil is believed to have formed from microscopic plants and animals that rested on the bottom or rivers, lakes and shallow seas. The decaying organisms were then quickly covered with sand and mud. Over a long period of time, many sedimentary layers are added on top. The original layer of marine life has by now turned into oil, water and gas. The sediments above come together forming porous and non-porous rock layers. The non-porous rock soaked up the liquid so that it now sits between two layers. The porous rock is on top and the non-porous rock is on the bottom. Miners, in order to extract the oil or gas, need to drill through the top layer of rock in order to reach it.

  • WHAT ARE NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES?
Non-renewable energy sources are those that take millions of years to form from energy that came from the sun. The negative aspects of non-renewable energy sources are that once they’re used, they cannot be reused again. Also, in the process of converting the energy into electricity or other forms of energy, it either releases co2 or looses energy along the way. The non-renewable energy sources are good because they are cheap to use and they are currently abundant. Crude oil, natural gases and coal are all non-renewable energy sources.

  • WHAT ARE RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES?
Renewable energy sources are those that can never run out. Sources such as sunlight, water and wind are all renewable because their energy can be reused. Renewable energy is positive because there is an indefinite supply and also because they don’t emit co2 and other green house gases. Renewable energy is negative because currently, they do not provide enough power compared to what is used now. Sources such as wind and water are renewable energy sources.
